Praying Mantis, 2012

This praying mantis was a project I completed in my second year of university. Using a combination of Maya and Mudbox, I modelled, sculpted, textured, rigged, animated and lit the scene. I was fortunate enough to purchase my own female praying mantis, and therefore observe her characteristics and mannerisms. As a result of this, I feel my animation was more realistic and natural than if I'd simply relied on online resources. I was inspired by pioneering animators Ladislaw Starevich and Willis O'Brien, whose early 20th century techniques helped shape our understanding of motion blur and luminance keying.
